Drones and ISIS Combat

While Russia, the United States and other countries are keen to have more modern aircraft, Ukraine has not been able to provide the same training for its soldiers. The Ukrainians may have been trained in Western countries on vehicles and aircraft but they do not have the same training for drones. Ukrainians are accustomed to older equipment like trucks so drones make it easier to use. Drones don't require pilots, making them easier for soldiers to use. Drones also have an easy to use interface, much like those found in video games.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military uses an unusual approach to fighting ISIS in east Ukraine. Octocopters are equipped with thermal cameras and can be used for night-time missions. Some drones can be fitted with antitank weapons and can even light up columns. These drones are highly maneuverable, and can carry as much 11 lbs payload. Due to their small size, the drones are able to fly low over targets and drop munition.

Aerorozvidka began life as an IT enthusiast team. Now, Aerorozvidka operates as a military aircraft reconnaissance unit. Aerorozvidka started out as a civilian drone business. Over time, however, it has evolved to a full-fledged unit that is headed by its own leader. Due to export restrictions, the Ukrainian government prohibited Russian military aircraft entry into Ukraine. Since many of the components of the drones are manufactured in the US, Aerorozvidka relies on donations and crowdfunding to help keep the company going.

Switchblade

The U.S. military is supplying Ukraine with armed "Switchblade" drones, which are able to strike Russian tanks from miles away. This unmanned aerial vehicle was developed by the US Air Force to meet Ukrainian requirements. John Kirby (Pentagon spokesperson) stated that more then 121 of these machines have been dispatched to Ukraine. There is not yet any information about how the Switchblades are used in the conflict with Ukraine.

The Switchblade drone is small and easy to launch from a tube. It has a range 40 km. The Switchblade is able to hit a Russian convoy 6 miles away, which is unlike Bayraktar drones. These small aircraft can set up quickly in a conflict like Ukraine. The Switchblade is capable of flying much faster than the Bayraktar, which is the current U.S. ally.

Russian kamikaze drones

Recently, the US announced a $800 million military aid package to Ukraine. One part of that package includes the delivery to Ukraine of 121 unmanned aircraft known as "Phoenix Ghosts," which will terrorize Russian forces. These aircraft can hover over areas for 30- to 40 minutes and are equipped to carry warheads and cameras. One such drone is the Switchblade, a 5.5-pound hovering munition that can take out armored vehicles and tanks.

These lightweight, small aircrafts can be operated from land, sea, and air thanks to their powerful, low-flying, gimbal. Any advantage an opponent has over their counterpart in an aerial battle like this is vital. Russian kamikaze aircrafts pose a threat to that advantage. This capability is likely to be a key weapon for Ukraine's military as it can break Russian sieges and attack command and control nodes. This capability would be a big liability for both parties, but Ukraine could emerge victorious if a small drone makes a difference on battlefield.

U.S. loitering drones

Russia has begun integrating its ZALA KYB loitering munitions into the military arsenal of the country. These drones are able to use lethal loitering munitions in the manner of bazookas. The use of loitering drones may lead to the proliferation of these autonomous killing machines in black markets. But experts and observers are worried. So what can the U.S. Do to prevent this?

Kirby reports that the U.S. government dispatched more then 121 Switchblade loitering drones to Ukraine to support Kiev's fight against Russian forces. The Switchblade drone measures 5.5lbs and can hover above an area for anywhere from thirty to forty minute. It comes with a camera as well as a small warhead. Its mission is to eliminate the opposition forces within Ukraine.
